Deniece Williams’ “I’m So Proud”, released in 1983, was the Diva’s sixth solo studio album and is pure magic from beginning to end. Williams teams up with jazz virtuoso George Duke to co-produce this solid effort and the result was a stunningly well rounded effort. Williams co-wrote four of the eight tracks on this album. This is a beautifully produced and beautifully sung album. There can be no arguing with Williams’ spine tingling multi octave voice. There is no material that Williams can’t sing. The album has an overall inspirational theme running through it, foreshadowing Williams’ eventual foray into Gospel. The moving title track, which became a Top 30 R&B hit, the gorgeous “I’m Glad It’s You”, the smooth mid tempo “They Say”, the uplifting album closer “It’s Ok” and the R&B styled “Love, Peace and Unity” are all spiritual songs with a positive message in them. The jazzy “Heaven In Your Eyes” became a moderate R&B hit and a club favorite. Uplifting “Do What You Feel” became a Top 10 R&B hit and also enjoyed a successful run as a club favorite. “So Deep In Love”, a duet with Johnny Mathis, Williams’ frequent duet partner, was a criminally overlooked gem that should have been a cross over smash on all formats.
